Outdoor Furniture Cleaning Guide | Tips for Busy Homeowners
Jeff Hendricks • May 8, 2026

Outdoor furniture helps create a relaxing and comfortable space for family and friends. Whether you have a patio, deck, or backyard seating area, keeping your outdoor furniture clean can make your home look more welcoming. Dirt, rain, sunlight, and dust can quickly make furniture look old and worn out. The good news is that simple cleaning habits can help busy homeowners keep everything looking fresh without spending too much time.

I’m Jeff Hendricks, your trusted Realtor, and I always tell homeowners that a clean outdoor area improves both comfort and curb appeal. A neat outdoor space can also help protect the value of your home.

Start by brushing away leaves, dust, and dirt from your furniture every week. A soft brush or dry cloth works well for this quick cleaning step. Regular cleaning helps prevent stains and makes deep cleaning easier later.

Plastic outdoor furniture is one of the easiest types to clean. Use warm water mixed with mild dish soap and wipe the surface with a sponge or cloth. Rinse with clean water and let it dry naturally.

Wood furniture needs extra care to keep it in good condition. Use mild soap and a damp cloth to clean the wood gently. Avoid strong chemicals because they may damage the finish. Dry the furniture after cleaning to prevent cracks or moisture damage.

Metal furniture can develop rust if it stays wet for too long. Clean it with soapy water and dry it completely. Small rust spots can be removed with a soft brush or sandpaper.

Outdoor cushions and pillows should also be cleaned often. Many cushion covers can be machine washed, while small stains can be cleaned with mild soap and water. Always let cushions dry fully before using them again.

One simple way to save time is by using furniture covers. Covers protect furniture from rain, sunlight, and dirt when not in use. During bad weather, storing furniture in a covered area can also help it last longer.

Keeping outdoor furniture clean does not need to be difficult. Small cleaning habits can make a big difference and help your outdoor space stay beautiful all year.
