How to Block Drafts in Old Homes

Start by checking your windows and doors. Over time, the seals around them can wear out or become damaged. On a windy day, place your hand around the edges to feel for moving air. If you find a draft, replace the old weatherstripping or add new adhesive foam strips. You can also use a door sweep to seal the gap under exterior doors.

Next, inspect the areas around your windows. Small cracks between the window frame and the wall can let in outside air. Apply caulk to seal these openings. Make sure to remove any loose or damaged caulk before adding a fresh layer for the best results.

Don't forget to check your electrical outlets and light switches on exterior walls. These small openings may allow cold air to enter your home. Foam outlet gaskets are inexpensive and easy to install. Simply turn off the power, remove the cover plate, place the gasket behind it, and reinstall the cover.

Look around your attic, basement, and crawl spaces as well. Pipes, vents, and utility lines often leave small gaps where they pass through walls or floors. Use expanding spray foam or caulk to seal these openings. This helps stop drafts while improving your home's energy efficiency.

Fireplaces can also be a major source of drafts when they are not in use. Be sure the damper is fully closed. If you rarely use your fireplace, consider installing a chimney balloon or draft stopper to reduce heat loss.

Adding thicker curtains or insulated window coverings is another simple way to reduce drafts. These coverings create an extra barrier between your home and the outside air, helping rooms stay more comfortable throughout the year.

Finally, inspect your home every season. Weather, age, and normal wear can create new gaps over time. A quick inspection each spring and fall can help you catch problems early before they affect your comfort or energy costs.

Blocking drafts doesn't require a major renovation. Small improvements can make a big difference in keeping your home comfortable, lowering utility bills, and improving energy efficiency.
