Small nail holes, scratches, and chipped paint can make a home look older than it really is. The good news is that these minor wall repairs are easy to handle with a few basic tools. Whether you are preparing your home for guests, getting ready to sell, or simply want your walls to look fresh, learning how to touch up paint and fill nail holes can make a big difference.

Gather Your Supplies

Before you start, collect everything you need. You will usually need lightweight spackle or wall filler, a small putty knife, fine-grit sandpaper, a clean cloth, matching paint, and a small paintbrush or roller. If possible, use the original paint from when the wall was painted. This gives you the best chance of getting an exact color match.

Fill the Nail Holes

Start by removing any loose pieces of paint or drywall around the hole. Use a small amount of spackle and press it into the nail hole with your putty knife. Smooth the surface so the filler is level with the wall.

Do not use too much filler. A thin layer is usually enough for small holes. Let the spackle dry according to the product instructions. Once it is completely dry, gently sand the area with fine-grit sandpaper until it feels smooth.

Wipe away the dust with a clean, slightly damp cloth and allow the wall to dry before painting.

Touch Up the Paint

After filling and sanding the holes, it is time to touch up the paint. Stir the paint well before using it. Apply a small amount of paint over the repaired area with a brush or small roller.

Try not to spread the paint too far beyond the repair. Use light, even strokes to blend the new paint into the surrounding area. If the color does not cover well, allow the first coat to dry and apply a second thin coat.

Check Your Work

Once the paint has dried, look at the wall from different angles and in different lighting. Make sure the nail hole is no longer visible and the paint blends naturally with the rest of the wall.

For larger repairs or walls with heavily textured surfaces, you may need additional preparation or professional help.

Taking care of small wall imperfections is an easy way to keep your home looking clean and well maintained. A few minutes of simple repair work can improve the overall appearance of a room and help your home feel more cared for.
