How to Install and Maintain Landscape Lighting
Jeff Hendricks • May 17, 2026

Adding landscape lighting to your home is a simple way to improve curb appeal, increase safety, and create a warm outdoor space you can enjoy at night. Whether you want to highlight your garden, light up a walkway, or make your backyard more relaxing, landscape lighting can make a big difference.

The first step is planning where you want the lights. Walk around your yard at night and think about the areas that need more light. Pathways, driveways, patios, trees, and flower beds are common places to install lighting. Try not to use too many lights because a soft and natural look usually works best.

Next, choose the right type of lighting. Solar lights are easy to install and save energy because they charge during the day. Low-voltage LED lights are another popular option because they last a long time and use less electricity. Spotlights are great for highlighting trees or home features, while pathway lights help people walk safely at night.

Before installation, make sure you have the right tools and materials. Most low-voltage systems come with a transformer, wires, and fixtures. Start by placing the lights where you want them, then connect the wires and attach them to the transformer. After testing the system, bury the wires slightly underground to keep your yard neat and safe.

Maintaining landscape lighting is also important. Over time, dirt, rain, and weather can affect how the lights work. Clean the fixtures every few months to remove dust and debris. Replace burned-out bulbs when needed and check for damaged wires or loose connections. If you use solar lights, wipe the solar panels so they can charge properly.

It’s also a good idea to adjust your lighting as plants and trees grow. Bushes or branches may block the light, making your yard look uneven. Trimming plants regularly will help your lighting continue to shine beautifully.

Landscape lighting is a smart investment that adds beauty, security, and value to your property. With proper installation and simple maintenance, you can enjoy a bright and welcoming outdoor space for years to come.
