Keeping rodents out of your attic and crawl spaces
Jeff Hendricks • June 9, 2026

Few things can cause homeowners more frustration than discovering rodents in their attic or crawl space. Mice, rats, and other small pests often seek shelter in warm, protected areas of a home, especially during colder months. Unfortunately, once they move in, they can damage insulation, chew electrical wiring, contaminate stored items, and create unpleasant odors.

The good news is that preventing rodent infestations is often easier than dealing with them after they've settled in.

Start by inspecting the exterior of your home for small openings. Rodents can squeeze through surprisingly tiny gaps around pipes, vents, utility lines, and foundation cracks. Seal these entry points with durable materials such as steel wool, metal flashing, or caulk designed for pest control.

Keeping your yard well-maintained can also help. Trim tree branches that hang over the roof, remove piles of debris, and store firewood away from the home. These areas can provide shelter and easy access for rodents.

Inside the home, pay attention to food sources. Store pet food and pantry items in sealed containers, clean up crumbs promptly, and avoid leaving food out overnight. Even small amounts of food can attract unwanted visitors.

Regular attic and crawl space inspections are another important step. Look for droppings, gnaw marks, nesting materials, or signs of damage. Catching a problem early can save significant repair costs later.

If you suspect an infestation, contacting a licensed pest control professional can help identify the source and recommend the most effective solution.

By taking a few preventive measures, homeowners can protect their property, maintain a healthier living environment, and avoid costly repairs caused by rodents.
