How to seal entry points to prevent pests

Pests like ants, spiders, mice, cockroaches, and other insects often get into homes through small openings. Even tiny cracks and gaps can become easy entry points. The good news is that sealing these openings is one of the best ways to keep pests outside where they belong.

Start by walking around the outside of your home. Look closely at the foundation, walls, windows, doors, and roof. Check for cracks, holes, or gaps where pests could enter. Pay special attention to areas where pipes, cables, or wires go through the walls. These spots are common entry points for insects and rodents.
Small cracks can usually be sealed with caulk. For larger gaps, use weatherproof sealant or expanding foam. If you find holes around pipes, fill them properly so pests cannot squeeze through. Steel wool works well for blocking small openings that mice might use because they cannot easily chew through it.
Next, inspect your doors and windows. Replace worn or damaged weather stripping and install door sweeps if there are gaps under doors. Repair torn window screens and make sure windows close tightly. Keeping these areas sealed also helps improve energy efficiency.
Don't forget your garage, attic, and basement. These places often have hidden openings that are easy to miss. Check garage doors for gaps along the bottom and sides. Make sure attic vents have strong screens, and repair any damaged vent covers.
Keeping your home clean also helps prevent pests. Store food in sealed containers, clean up crumbs quickly, and take out the trash regularly. Remove standing water around your home since many pests are attracted to moisture.
Outside your home, trim bushes and tree branches so they do not touch the walls or roof. Keep firewood, cardboard boxes, and other stored items away from the foundation because they can provide shelter for pests.

It is a good idea to inspect your home at least twice a year. Weather, age, and normal wear can create new cracks over time. Fixing small problems early can prevent larger pest infestations later.
By sealing entry points and keeping your home well maintained, you can reduce the chances of pests getting inside. A little time spent on prevention can save money on repairs and pest control while helping your home stay clean, comfortable, and pest-free.
